The rapper says she struggled with her decision when asked to perform at this years Super Bowl LIII . Although the rapper reportedly received a lucrative offer, her choice to support ex-NFL player Colin Kaepernick outweighed any price.

Cardi told The Associated Press that the decision was a tough one considering her husband, Offset from the popular rap group Migos , is a huge fan of the sport.

“My husband, he loves football. His kids play football. It’s really hard for him. ... He really wants to go to the Super Bowl, but he can’t go to the Super Bowl, because he’s got to stand for something,” said Cardi who shares a baby daughter with the rapper.

“You have to sacrifice that,” she added. “I got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform. But there’s a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.”

Other artist including Rihanna , Jay-Z and P!nk have also turned down offers to perform the Super Bowl halftime show in support of Kaepernick. In a single off of his joint album with wife, Beyoncé , APESHIT (The Carters) , “I said no to the Superbowl, you need me, I don't need you. Every night we in the endzone, tell the NFL we in stadiums too.”

Many have given Cardi criticism for still partaking in Super Bowl related events, but she believes her work would not conflict with showing support for the NFL.

“I hear people saying like ‘Oh, y’all are saying all this stuff about the Super Bowl, but you’re doing all these parties,’” Cardi said. “And it’s like, well, if the NFL could benefit off from us, then I’m going to benefit off y’all. Y’all make the most money off our people. Why am I not going to take advantage of y’all and take money from y’all too? Because of y’all, we are getting these parties. OK, thank you.”

“When they see (how) the choices they made due to racism has affected the country, that’s when things are going to start changing. Right now, they don’t want to accept that their decision has affected the country,” Cardi added.
