6LACK Returns With New Single 'ATL Freestyle'

"It's new music season."

Earlier this month, 6LACK teased his impending return on social media, and on Friday (May 29) he came through, releasing his first solo single of 2020, "ATL Freestyle."

In what has been called a love letter to his hometown of Atlanta, the 27-year-old singer reflects on his past and present life in the city as he references a number of his childhood memories, including, "eatin' hot wings and bumpin' Gucci On the block," and recent performances in Atlanta.

He raps, "Ridin' through Atlanta on a off-day/ Hopin' that nobody double-cross me/ Hit up Keisha, 'Have you seen PARLAY?'/ 'Cause he ain't make it to the afterparty, ayy/ Spin the block 'cause it's hot, keepin' watch/ Six o' clock, time for Greg Street to rock/ Hmm, mmm, yeah, okay/ I used to walk around that corner, right in Kirkwood/ Ann's Snack Bar where the food real good/ I was livin' like a fool, breakin' all the rules."

Ahead of the single's release, 6LACK posted a message on social media, sharing his thoughts on the current state of the American black community following the killing of George Floyd.

"With the amount of pain and anger I feel in my heart, releasing a new song at this very moment doesn't feel like a great priority," he wrote. "Nothing ever prepares you for how to feel when you're constantly faced with the last dying breaths of black people, my people, on your television or phone screens every single day."
