Authorities appeared to slam the door on Rep. Maxine Waters as she attempted to enter a Los Angeles detention center amid protests over ICE raids.

On Sunday (June 8), video showed Waters approaching LA's Metropolitan Detention Center as authorities were securing the area.

“Hello, hello, hello, congresswoman Waters,” Waters said in the clip. “I just came to use my congressional authority to check on [inaudible].”

An officer told Waters that the building was closed to visitors.

"Excuse me, I need to get in,” Waters responded, to which the officer closed the door in her face.

In an X post, Waters spoke out about the situation, noting that she was exercising her right as a Member of Congress to enter the federal building.

“Today, I came to the Metropolitan Detention Center to exercise my constitutional rights as a Member of Congress to check on the safety and conditions of SEIU California President David Huerta, who was arrested by ICE,” Waters wrote.“I pled with the National Guard, which was heavily armed, not to use their weapons against peaceful demonstrators who were simply exercising their rights to freedom of speech and protest."

The incident came after protests broke out on Friday (June 6) across LA over ICE raids happening throughout the city. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday (June 7) that he was deploying the National Guard to LA to "liberate" the city from "Migrant Invasion."

“Order will be restored, the Illegals will be expelled, and Los Angeles will be set free,” Trump wrote.

The move marks the first time a president has called in the National Guard without a state’s request or consent in decades.

“You are a cruel human being,” Waters said of Trump on Sunday. “You are accusing the poorest people in the land, the most vulnerable people in the land to promote your politics.”
