A 13-year-old boy is on life support after being shot in the head outside a Dunkin’ in Queens, N.Y, PEOPLE reports.

On Monday (September 22), officers responded to a 911 call at the intersection of Linden Boulevard and Springfield Boulevard in Cambria Heights. found the boy with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim, identified by his family as Sanjay Samuel, was taken to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in critical condition.

Doctors have since informed the family that Samuel is brain-dead.

“Sanjay's not doing well. Sanjay's brain dead,” Samuel's mother, Vilene Griffith, said. “Nothing is going on. He's not breathing on his own. He's not doing nothing.”

Griffith said she may face “the hardest decision of her life” if there’s no improvement.

“Miracles do happen, and I'm trusting God for Sanjay to get up," she added.

Samuel was reportedly with friends when a suspect approached and fired a single shot before fleeing on a scooter. Police said no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

A GoFundMe created by the family describes Samuel as “a vibrant, fun-loving teenager” who enjoys basketball, fishing, dancing, and playing the drums.
