President Donald Trump attempted to brush off the millions of demonstrators who participated in "No Kings" protests across the nation as a "joke."
"I'm not a king. I work my ass off to make our country great. That’s all it is. I’m not a king at all," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday (October 19) while returning from a trip to Florida, per The Hill.
The "No Kings" protests, which took place Saturday (October 18), drew millions of demonstrators across the country, with an estimated 2,600 events in cities like Washington, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Protesters rallied against Trump’s authoritarian rhetoric and behavior, chanting slogans and holding signs that read “No Kings.”
Despite the massive turnout, Trump downplayed the events and accused his political opponents of orchestrating them.
“I think it’s a joke,” Trump said. “I looked at the people — they’re not representative of this country. And I looked at all the brand new signs… I guess it was paid for by [George] Soros and other radical left lunatics. It looks like it was. We’re checking it out.”
The president went on to call the demonstrators “very small, very ineffective,” describing them as “whacked out.”
In a separate interview ahead of the protests, Trump also rejected protests against his authoritarian agenda.
“They’re referring to me as a king. I’m not a king,” he said.
